Villamaría lies in Colombia's Caldas Department, directly across the Chinchiná River from the city of Manizales, and the two form one metropolitan area. On a map the river valley draws a clear line between them, and Villamaría's streets spread over the slopes on the southern side, following ridges and stepping around ravines the way mountain towns in this part of the Andes must.
The town is part of the Eje Cafetero, Colombia's coffee-growing heartland. Its municipality reaches up toward the high country of Los Nevados National Natural Park and the glaciated volcano Nevado del Ruiz. Beyond the built-up area the land breaks into farms, plantations and patches of forest arranged along steep contours, with narrow roads threading between them.
