Vilvoorde lies directly north of Brussels, and its map is shaped by lines of transport. The Brussels–Scheldt Maritime Canal runs through the town, lined with docks and industrial sites, and the Zenne river follows a similar course. The Brussels ring motorway crosses the valley here on a long viaduct, one of the most visible structures in the area.
The historic centre, with the Church of Our Lady and a network of older streets, sits beside the waterways. Vilvoorde also has an international connection: the English Bible translator William Tyndale was imprisoned in the castle here and executed in 1536, and a memorial in the town remembers him.
