Vitebsk Map Poster & Print
Vitebsk lies on the Western Dvina in north-eastern Belarus, at the point where the small Vitba River joins it. The larger river crosses the city in a broad curve and divides it into two banks linked by several bridges. The Vitba cuts a winding valley through the historic centre. From above, the old town stands on raised ground above the water, and its streets follow the terrain rather than a grid.
The city is best known as the birthplace of Marc Chagall. His childhood streets and wooden houses appear again and again in his paintings, and the house where he grew up is now a museum. In the early twentieth century, Vitebsk also had an important art school connected with Kazimir Malevich and the avant-garde. Today it hosts the annual Slavianski Bazaar festival.
