Wafangdian is a county-level city administered by Dalian, lying on the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning province. On a map the urban core forms a compact grid of wide streets and large blocks, surrounded by farmland and low hills. Railway lines and highways run north to south through the area, linking it with Dalian at the peninsula's tip and with Shenyang further inland.

The Wafangdian Bearing company, often abbreviated ZWZ, is one of the country's long-established bearing manufacturers, and much of the city's development grew around it.
