Wajir is the main town of Wajir County in northeastern Kenya, on a wide, flat, semi-arid plain. From above it appears as a low, spread-out settlement. Its sandy streets form a loose grid, and compounds and open ground sit between the houses. The main roads leave town toward other regional centres, and the landscape beyond is mostly open scrub.
The town has long been known for its shallow wells, which made it an important stopping point for pastoral communities and traders across the region. An airport with a long runway lies close to the town and shows as one of the clearest straight lines on the map.
