Wamena Map Poster & Print
Wamena lies in the Baliem Valley in the central highlands of Papua, more than 1,500 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Jayawijaya Regency and, since 2022, of the province of Highland Papua. There are no road links to the coast, so almost everything arrives by air, and the airstrip is one of the most prominent features on the map of the town.
The Baliem River flows across the broad, flat valley floor, and steep mountain ridges enclose it on all sides. The valley is the homeland of the Dani and neighbouring peoples, whose cultivation of sweet potato in drained fields shaped the landscape long before the town was established in the mid-twentieth century.
