Warren sits in Macomb County, directly north of Detroit, and its map is almost a diagram of Michigan's mile-road system. Eight Mile Road forms the southern boundary. The numbered mile roads to the north cross major north-south routes such as Van Dyke and Mound Road, dividing the city into large squares filled with tight residential streets.
The city grew quickly in the mid-twentieth century with the automotive industry. It is home to the General Motors Technical Center, a modernist campus designed by Eero Saarinen, and to the Detroit Arsenal, which houses the US Army's tank and vehicle command.
