This Wenjiang lies in southern Sichuan, in the hilly country south of the city of Yibin. It is not the Wenjiang district of Chengdu. On a map the town is shaped by its terrain. The built-up area follows a valley floor, and the streets run alongside a watercourse and fork where side valleys open. Terraced fields and wooded slopes surround it closely.
Little of the landscape here is flat, and that shows in the street pattern. Instead of a grid, roads trace the contours, climbing in switchbacks where they leave the valley and linking scattered villages across the ridges. The region belongs to the wider Yangtze basin, and the valleys drain north towards the great river.
