Wetzlar Map Poster & Print
Wetzlar is in central Hesse, where the Dill River joins the Lahn. On a map the old town sits on a rise above the river, a tight knot of winding lanes around the cathedral. Newer districts spread out along both valleys, and railway lines follow the lower ground.
From 1689 to 1806 the town was home to the Imperial Chamber Court of the Holy Roman Empire, which is why the young Goethe came here in 1772. His time in Wetzlar led to The Sorrows of Young Werther. Later the town became known for precision optics, especially Leica cameras.
