Xiangyang's map is shaped by the Han River, which curves through the city and separates its two historic halves. On the southern bank lies Xiangcheng, the old walled city, surrounded by a moat so wide that it is among the broadest in China. On the northern bank is Fancheng, historically the commercial quarter, with a denser, busier street pattern.
Bridges connect the two sides, and newer districts spread along the river in both directions. South of the old city, hills rise and the street network becomes sparser, while the northern side opens onto flatter ground where industrial zones and newer residential areas have grown in wide blocks.
A Xiangyang map poster shows one of the most strategically important cities in Chinese history. Its six-year siege by Mongol forces in the thirteenth century was a turning point in the fall of the Southern Song dynasty.
