Xiaomian lies in the hilly countryside of Chongqing municipality, north of the main urban area, in a landscape of ridges, valleys and terraced fields typical of the eastern Sichuan Basin. From above, very little here runs straight. Roads follow the contours in tight bends and switchbacks, and the town has grown into whatever level ground the terrain allows.
The built-up area is fairly compact, with a denser core along the main roads and housing climbing gently onto the slopes around it. Beyond the town, the map is dominated by rural lanes, small ponds and scattered farmhouses spread across the hillsides. Streams run in the valley bottoms, and the pattern of settlement follows them closely.
