Xingyi is in the steep, folded hill country of eastern Chongqing, a region of ridges, terraced slopes and narrow valleys. Flat land is limited here, so the town fits wherever the terrain allows. Roads follow the natural lines of the ground, bend around slopes and join where the valleys meet. From above, the layout is shaped mainly by topography.
Towns in this part of Chongqing usually grow along a main road or river valley. Denser blocks sit on the lowest, flattest ground, and scattered farmsteads and fields climb the hillsides around them.
