Yagoua lies in Cameroon's Far North region, on the west bank of the Logone River, which here marks the border with Chad. From above, the town spreads along the river, its streets set on flat ground that floods seasonally beyond the built area. Across the water lies the Chadian town of Bongor, making this a true border landscape.
The surrounding floodplain has long been used for farming and fishing, and the area is known for large irrigated rice schemes that draw regular, rectangular patterns on the land. The Massa people are among the main communities of the area, and the rhythms of the river and the rainy season still shape life here.
