Yinping lies in the hilly north-eastern part of Chongqing municipality, on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. The land here is anything but flat. On the map, streets follow the contours of hills and valleys, and farmland climbs the slopes in terraces. Roads wind between them instead of running straight.
This part of Chongqing is marked by long, parallel ridges running roughly north-east to south-west, with farmed valleys in between. Towns tend to spread along valley floors or across gentler slopes, and the built-up area often follows a stream or road. Beyond the centre, scattered farmhouses and paths cover the hillsides.
