Yuyao Map Poster & Print
Yuyao lies in northeastern Zhejiang, within the city of Ningbo, on the flat and heavily watered plain south of Hangzhou Bay. From above, the Yao River winds through the centre, and the older districts sit close along its banks. Around them, newer districts spread outward in broad blocks, and the surrounding land is crossed by canals, rivers and farm plots.
The area has a long past. The Hemudu archaeological site nearby, a Neolithic settlement around seven thousand years old, is one of the earliest known rice-growing communities in China. Yuyao is also the birthplace of Wang Yangming, the Ming dynasty philosopher whose ideas remain influential across East Asia.
