Zhijiang lies on the Yangtze in western Hubei, downstream from Yichang, where the river leaves the mountains of the Three Gorges and slows into open country. From above, the town follows the riverbank. It has a compact centre and a band of streets parallel to the water, with farmland spreading across the flat ground beyond.
Zhijiang is a county-level city under the administration of Yichang. Its name, often translated as branching river, is usually explained by the way the Yangtze divides in this stretch, flowing around islands and sandbars. The surrounding plain is fertile and closely farmed. The river has long made the area a place of passage between the uplands to the west and central China.
