Zhitikara is in Kostanay Region in northern Kazakhstan, on the open steppe near the border with Russia. It was formerly known as Dzhetygara. On a map, the town forms a compact grid of streets on flat land, surrounded by plains that stretch far in every direction.
The town grew up around the mining of asbestos, and the open-pit quarry beside it is one of the largest features on the map.
