Žytkavičy stands in the Homyel region of southern Belarus, in the heart of Polesia. This is a very flat landscape of wetlands, forest and slow rivers. The town sits near the Prypiat, which winds across a broad floodplain in loops. On a map, water and marsh take up nearly as much space as the town itself.
The built-up area is compact, with fairly regular streets on higher, drier ground. Roads leave it on raised lines across the low land. Around it, the Prypiat valley is full of old channels, crescent-shaped lakes and drainage cuts. A fine web of water covers the surrounding countryside.
