Fano sits on the Adriatic coast of the Marche, where the ancient Via Flaminia reached the sea. The Romans knew it as Fanum Fortunae, and the old town still follows their plan: a regular grid of straight streets inside a walled rectangle. The Arch of Augustus, the monumental gateway on the Flaminia, still stands at the western entrance to the centre.
Seen from above, Fano has three clear parts: the compact walled centre, the harbour and canal to the northeast, and long stretches of sand running along the shore in both directions. The Metauro river reaches the sea a short way to the south. Fano is also known for its carnival, one of the oldest in Italy, where sweets are thrown from the floats into the crowd.
