Osimo Map Poster
Osimo stands on a hill a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic, south of Ancona, with the Conero promontory visible toward the sea. The town was the Roman Auximum, and stretches of its ancient walls still survive along the edge of the historic centre. On a map the old town forms a compact oval, and its streets bend to follow the curve of the hill.
At the highest point stands the cathedral of San Leopardo, and lanes and small piazzas step down from there toward the gates. Beneath the town runs a network of tunnels and caves carved into the soft rock. These spaces do not appear on the map, but they help explain why the town has held on so firmly to its hilltop.
Osimo is sometimes called the town of the headless, a nickname taken from the Roman statues without heads displayed in the courtyard of the town hall. Cathedral summit
The cathedral of San Leopardo crowns the hill. The surrounding streets radiate and curve away from it, which makes the summit the natural focal point of the map.
Valleys below
Rolling farmland and river valleys surround the town. Roads wind down through them toward the coast, and their lines loosen as they move away from the walls.
