Rožňava sits in the valley of the Slaná river in eastern Slovakia, where the land narrows between wooded hills. From above, the plan is easy to read. A very large rectangular square takes up the historic core, and the older streets run off it in tight parallel lines. Newer housing blocks and suburbs spread along the valley floor, following the river and the roads toward Košice and the west.
The town grew from mining. For centuries gold, silver and later iron ore were dug from the surrounding hills, and the regular medieval plan still reflects that prosperity. In the middle of the square stands a free-standing watchtower, a clear vertical mark in the centre of the map. Rožňava is also a bishop's seat, and its cathedral sits near the old core. It is a quiet, orderly plan with a long past.

The Slaná traces a soft curve beside the grid, and roads leave the valley in thin threads. Nearby lie the limestone plateaus of the Slovak Karst and the hilltop castle of Krásna Hôrka, so the town works as a gateway to one of the most distinctive landscapes in the country.

The river runs through the valley beside the town and guides where it has grown. Housing and roads stretch along its course instead of climbing the steep, wooded slopes.
Karst on the edges
South and west of town the land rises toward the plateaus of the Slovak Karst. On the poster it shows as open space around the dense centre.
