Tyre Map Poster
Tyre is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Mediterranean, a Phoenician port on the southern Lebanese coast. It began as an island. When Alexander the Great besieged it in 332 BC, he built a causeway from the mainland. Over the following centuries sand built up against it and turned the island into the peninsula visible on the map today, with a broad neck linking the old town and the new.
At the tip of the peninsula, the old town gathers around its northern harbour, which fishing boats still use. Traces of a southern harbour lie along the opposite shore. The archaeological sites at Al-Mina and Al-Bass preserve colonnaded streets, a large necropolis and one of the largest Roman hippodromes known. UNESCO inscribed the city as a World Heritage Site in 1984.

Fishing harbour
The northern harbour sits at the edge of the old town. Its breakwaters and quays are drawn as a small enclosed basin among narrow lanes.
Roman hippodrome
At the Al-Bass site, the long oval of the Roman hippodrome and the colonnaded road beside it make a strong geometric shape among the surrounding streets.
