Wilmington Island lies east of Savannah in Chatham County, one of the chain of islands between the city and the Atlantic. On a map its outline is irregular and deeply indented, shaped by the Wilmington River and a network of tidal creeks that cut into the land. The streets follow the high ground, curving along the shore and ending in quiet cul-de-sacs that reach towards the marsh.
The island is largely residential, with homes set among live oaks, a golf course and small marinas along the waterfront. The main road towards Tybee Island passes nearby, linking the island to Savannah in one direction and the beaches in the other. Around it spread the salt marshes of the Georgia coast, flat and open, cut by channels that fill and drain with the tides.
Land and water are almost equally present here, and that balance gives the place a striking graphic quality.
