Allston sits on the south bank of the Charles River in Boston, and from above it looks like several street systems joined together. The river curves along its northern edge. The Massachusetts Turnpike and its rail corridor run east to west across the middle, and Commonwealth Avenue forms a broad line along the southern side, with side streets branching off it.
The neighbourhood has long been home to students and young renters, and it is known for the yearly turnover of leases at the start of September, when furniture lines the pavements. Harvard University has built its Allston campus along the riverbank, including its business school and athletic facilities. On a map, that area shows up as larger blocks and open ground beside the tighter residential streets.

The Massachusetts Turnpike and the railway run beside each other across the neighbourhood as a wide band. The residential blocks on either side show clearly how far the road cuts in.
Commonwealth Avenue
This wide avenue, with the tram running down its centre, marks the southern side of Allston. Shorter residential streets branch off it in closely spaced rows toward the north.
