Ashdod lies on Israel's southern Mediterranean coast, and from above its outline is shaped by a straight shoreline. The city was planned from the 1950s as a series of residential quarters, and the map shows these neighbourhoods as distinct units, each with its own internal network of streets, separated by wide boulevards and green belts.
In the north, a large deepwater port extends into the sea with long breakwaters, forming one of the most striking geometric shapes on the coast. The Lachish river reaches the sea near the port, and to the south, sand dunes and beaches stretch along the shore.
