Planned grid
Residential and civic blocks follow a regular grid, the result of planning for an oil workforce, and the pattern stands out clearly on the empty desert background.

Die Karte
Baijiantan Map Poster & Print
Baijiantan is a district of Karamay, the oil city on the northwestern rim of the Dzungarian Basin in Xinjiang. From above, its planned streets stand out sharply against the surrounding desert: a tidy grid of roads and housing blocks, and beyond it wide open ground crossed by pipelines and service tracks.
The district grew up with the oil industry, and that origin is visible in the layout. Industrial compounds, storage areas and long straight roads lead out toward the fields, while tree belts and small green spaces mark the efforts made to soften a dry, windy environment.
A Baijiantan map poster has a stark, graphic quality. The built area forms a compact patch of detail with little around it but thin lines and empty space. For people who worked in the oil fields or grew up in this remote corner of Xinjiang, the map describes a very particular place.

Oil-field roads
Long straight roads and service tracks run out from the district toward the surrounding oil fields, drawing fine lines across otherwise open terrain.
Desert margin
Beyond the last streets the map empties into desert, a wide blank space that gives the composition its spare, almost abstract character.

Warum Baijiantan
Eine Karte mit Bedeutung
Oil towns create strong bonds among the people who build them. A map of Baijiantan can honour years of work in the fields, a childhood spent at the desert's edge, or a family's move west.
Change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example to add a name or the year you arrived, and choose one of five styles. Noir and Sand suit the desert setting. Buy the digital files for $9 or order a printed poster, with an optional wooden frame.
