Baisha is a town in Jiangjin District, in the southwest of Chongqing municipality, on the bank of the Yangtze River. On a map the river dominates everything. It sweeps through the frame as a wide, dark ribbon, and the town lies in a long band along one shore instead of spreading evenly in all directions.
The terrain here is typical of the Chongqing hills, and it shapes the street pattern. Roads follow the contours in long curves, older lanes run down toward the waterfront, and newer blocks sit on flatter ground set back from the river. Baisha has long worked as a river port, and its place on the water explains much of its layout.
