Bandar-e Māhshahr lies on the very flat coast of Khuzestan, at the head of the Persian Gulf. The landscape is shaped by water. Tidal creeks, called khors, wind inland through mudflats and salt marshes, and the town sits on firmer ground among them. On a map, these branching channels give it an intricate, organic edge.
The area is one of Iran’s main petrochemical centres. A special economic zone for the industry lies next to the town, with large rectangular plant sites, pipelines and storage tanks. Nearby, the port of Bandar Imam Khomeini handles much of the country’s bulk shipping, with long jetties reaching into the creeks.
