Beckley is the seat of Raleigh County in southern West Virginia. It was laid out by Alfred Beckley and named after his father, John James Beckley, the first Librarian of Congress. For much of its history the town served the surrounding coal fields, and the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine still lets visitors ride into a former seam beneath the city's parkland.
