Bom Jesus da Lapa lies on the right bank of the São Francisco River in western Bahia. It is one of Brazil's major pilgrimage centres. The sanctuary of Bom Jesus is set inside caves in a large limestone outcrop near the river, and every year it draws pilgrims from across the country.

The rocky hill rises near the centre as a clear break in the street pattern, and streets spread out from the waterfront and around the hill toward the dry backcountry.
