Botad sits on the level plain of Saurashtra, in the peninsula that forms the western part of Gujarat. The town has no river or coastline to shape it. Instead, the map is organised by roads and railway lines that converge on the centre, with tightly packed older neighbourhoods near the core and looser blocks and fields spreading outward.
Botad became the headquarters of its own district in 2013, when Botad district was formed from parts of Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar districts. The town is a trading centre for the surrounding cotton-growing countryside and has a sizeable diamond cutting and polishing industry. The well-known Hanuman temple at Salangpur lies within the district.
