The town sits at the foot of a steep rock crowned by the remains of Boyabat Castle, a fortification whose origins reach back to antiquity. Not far from the town, the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, is held back by the Boyabat Dam, forming a long reservoir that winds through the hills.
