Die Karte
Caerphilly Map Poster & Print
Caerphilly lies in a basin north of Cardiff, where the Rhymney valley opens out beneath Caerphilly Mountain. Its centre is dominated by Caerphilly Castle, built in the thirteenth century by Gilbert de Clare and regarded as the largest castle in Wales and one of the largest in Britain.
The castle's concentric walls and extensive water defences are clearly visible on a map. Artificial lakes surround it, forming a large open area in the middle of the town, and the streets curve around them rather than cutting through. A tower that leans noticeably off vertical is one of the castle's best-known features.
A Caerphilly map poster puts that unusual centre at the heart of the composition, with terraced streets and housing estates spreading across the valley floor and up the hillsides. The town is also known for Caerphilly cheese, a crumbly white cheese that takes its name from the area.

Valley terraces
Terraced streets and later estates climb the slopes around the town, their lines following the contours of the Rhymney valley.
Caerphilly Mountain
To the south the ground rises to Caerphilly Mountain, leaving an open area on the map between the town and Cardiff beyond.
