Die Karte
Cala Map Poster & Print
Cala is a small town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in the uplands of the former Transkei. The landscape here is high, open grassland rising towards the foothills of the southern Drakensberg, with rounded hills and deep valleys. The town serves as a local centre for the many rural villages scattered across the surrounding hills.
The street plan of the town itself is compact, with a small commercial centre and residential areas spreading outward. Beyond it, the settlement pattern changes completely. Homesteads are dispersed across the slopes in small clusters, connected by gravel roads and footpaths, with streams running through the valleys between them.
A Cala map poster reflects both of these patterns. At the centre there is a small, organised street network. Around it, a looser web of roads and tracks follows the lie of the land. The hills are implied by the way paths bend and streams wind, which gives the print a sense of space and height.

Hill settlements
Homesteads are scattered in clusters across the surrounding slopes. Tracks and footpaths link them, creating a loose, organic pattern.
Valley streams
Small rivers and streams run through the valleys between the hills. They add winding lines that hint at the terrain's relief.

Warum Cala
Eine Karte mit Bedeutung
For people from Cala and the surrounding villages, many of whom now live in East London, Gqeberha, Johannesburg or Cape Town, a map is a way to keep home close. It records the roads and hills that shape life here.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a clan name, a village or a special date. Choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand echoes the colours of the winter grassland.
