Calexico sits at the southern edge of California's Imperial Valley, where the border cuts a straight line across the map. North of that line the town is laid out as a regular grid of blocks and avenues. South of it, the streets of Mexicali carry on in a different pattern. From above, the two cities read almost as one settlement split by a single ruled stroke.
Around the town, the land is divided into large rectangular fields. Irrigation canals and farm roads run in long straight lines, and they give the surrounding valley a precise, geometric texture. The names Calexico and Mexicali are both blends of California and Mexico, which says something about how closely the two places have grown together since the early twentieth century.
