Chesapeake covers a large stretch of southeastern Virginia, from the edge of Norfolk down to the North Carolina line. From above it looks less like one city than a patchwork. Dense neighbourhoods line the branches of the Elizabeth River in the north, commercial districts gather around Greenbrier, and long stretches of farmland, forest and wetland fill the south.
The city was created in 1963 when the former Norfolk County merged with the city of South Norfolk. Two historic canals cross its territory, and both now carry the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The Dismal Swamp Canal is one of the oldest operating artificial waterways in the United States, and the other is the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. The city's southwestern corner reaches into the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

The Dismal Swamp Canal and the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal cut straight across the low ground. Both carry the Intracoastal Waterway south towards the sounds of North Carolina.

South of the suburbs the street network thins into long rural roads, fields and the forested edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, leaving calm open space in the lower part of the frame.
