The map shows a flat, orderly grid of residential streets, typical of the Los Angeles basin. Major boulevards and the rail corridors carrying freight between the ports and downtown cut across it.
Compton Creek runs through the city in a concrete channel, and the 91 and 710 freeways mark its edges and cross points. There is also a small general aviation airport. The city has a strong cultural reputation as a birthplace of West Coast hip-hop, and it is where Venus and Serena Williams learned tennis on public courts.
