Old Fortress moat
A channel separates the fortified promontory from the town, so the fortress almost appears as its own island on the map.

Corfu Map Poster & Print
Corfu town sits on the eastern coast of its island, facing the mainland across a narrow strait. The Old Fortress occupies a small promontory separated from the town by a channel dug as a moat. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on any Greek coastline. The New Fortress rises on the other side of the old town, and between them lies a maze of narrow streets.
The old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its layout reflects centuries of Venetian rule, followed by French and British periods. The large open Spianada square sits between the old town and the Old Fortress, and the arcaded Liston runs along one side. To the south, the curve of Garitsa Bay leads the eye along the coast.
A Corfu map poster makes the most of this dense and complicated plan. The tightly woven old streets, the heavy outlines of the fortresses and the channel around the promontory all hold their own in black and white. The result looks more like an engraved plan than a modern street map, which suits the town's long history.

Spianada square
A wide open space between the old town and the fortress provides a calm break in the dense street pattern. The Liston arcade runs along its edge.
Garitsa Bay
South of the old town, a smooth bay curves along the coast. It balances the intricate streets with a simple, open stretch of water.
