Dolores Hidalgo sits on the high plateau of Guanajuato, and on a map its centre reads as a clear colonial grid. Blocks of similar size line up around a main square, and the parish church faces that square as the town's anchor. The town's full name honours Miguel Hidalgo, the priest who in September 1810 rang the church bell here and called parishioners to rise against Spanish rule.
