El Cerrito lies in the department of Valle del Cauca, on the eastern side of the wide Cauca River valley, between Cali and Buga. The town has a regular layout of blocks around a central plaza. Because the land is flat, the grid continues outward with little interruption until it meets the surrounding farmland.
Sugarcane defines the landscape. The valley floor is covered in large cane fields crossed by straight farm roads, while to the east the foothills of the Cordillera Central begin to rise. The municipality includes the Hacienda El Paraíso, the setting of Jorge Isaacs' nineteenth-century novel María, one of the best-known works of Colombian literature.
