Eureka sits on the eastern shore of Humboldt Bay on California's far north coast, and water shapes the whole map. Across from the town, narrow sand spits hold back the Pacific, and a chain of bridges that crosses islands in the bay links Eureka to the Samoa Peninsula. On the landward side, sloughs and marshes wind into the edges of a regular street grid.
The town grew on timber and shipping in the nineteenth century, and its Old Town still has a dense collection of Victorian buildings near the waterfront. The Carson Mansion, built for a lumber baron, is often described as one of the most elaborate Victorian houses in the United States. Eureka is also the seat of Humboldt County and a gateway to the redwood forests.
