Grímsey lies about forty kilometres off Iceland's north coast and is the country's northernmost inhabited place. It is small and compact, a little over five square kilometres, with high sea cliffs along much of its eastern side and lower ground to the west, where the harbour and the island's few houses stand. An airstrip runs across the southern part.
The Arctic Circle passes across the island, and a marker stands at the line for visitors who make the crossing. Grímsey is also known for its seabird colonies, including puffins, which nest in large numbers along the cliffs in summer. Ferries run from Dalvík on the mainland, and small planes fly from Akureyri.
