Die Karte
Gualán Map Poster & Print
Gualán lies in the department of Zacapa, in the valley of the Motagua, Guatemala's longest river. The valley here is hot and fairly dry, with hills on both sides, and the town sits on the flat ground near the river. From above, its streets form a loose grid that stretches along the valley instead of spreading outward.
Three lines run roughly parallel through the area: the river, the old railway and the main highway linking Guatemala City with the Caribbean ports. The town grew along these routes, and on a map they run through the whole composition. The Motagua's meanders and sandbars bring natural curves to an otherwise orderly layout.
Beyond the edge of town the map gives way to farmland and the rising slopes of the valley. A Gualán map poster keeps all of this in view: a river town on a long corridor, where road, rail and water have followed the same valley for generations.

Valley corridor
The highway and the old railway follow the valley floor side by side, showing how the terrain funnels every major route through the same narrow strip.
Grid on the flats
On the level ground by the river, the town's streets settle into a simple grid, a regular core set against the irregular hills around it.
