Seasonal riverbed
A wide sandy channel runs through the city, usually dry but flowing after rains. It splits the map into two halves joined by a handful of bridges.

Hargeysa Map Poster & Print
Hargeysa lies on a high plateau in the north-west of the Somali region, and its map is organised around a seasonal riverbed that runs through the centre. For much of the year the channel is dry sand, and on the map it appears as a pale band dividing the city into northern and southern halves. Neighbourhoods spread out on both sides in loose grids, with main roads leading toward the coast and the Ethiopian border.
Hargeysa is the capital of Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 and runs its own government, though it is not internationally recognised. The city was heavily damaged in the late 1980s, and a MiG fighter jet mounted as a monument in the centre recalls that period. Outside the city, the Laas Geel caves hold some of the best-preserved Neolithic rock paintings in Africa.
A Hargeysa map poster shows a city that has rebuilt itself across open highland ground. The riverbed provides a strong natural divide, and the neighbourhoods spread in every direction from it. In monochrome, the dry channel and the plateau around the city become calm spaces around a busy street network.

Markets, government buildings and the central monument cluster near the riverbed, where the street network is densest and most irregular.
Plateau edges
Beyond the neighbourhoods the land opens into dry plateau, and the main roads run out in long straight lines toward Berbera and the border.
