On a map the town has a clear core: a small, irregular centre of older streets around the market area, surrounded by rings of twentieth-century housing that spread outward in every direction until they meet farmland.
The town's edges are sharply drawn by roads. The A5, which follows the line of the Roman Watling Street, runs along the south-western side, while the M69 passes to the east. To the west the Ashby Canal curves through the countryside, a thin line of water that gives the map a quieter, older rhythm.
