Sound of Iona
A narrow strait separates the island from Mull, and the short ferry crossing between the two shores is one of the defining features of the map.

Iona Map Poster & Print
Iona sits just off the southwestern point of the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, separated from it by the Sound of Iona. On a map it is a short, narrow island running roughly northeast to southwest, with a rocky, uneven western coast facing the open Atlantic and a gentler eastern shore facing Mull.
Nearly all settlement lies on the east side, where the small village of Baile Mòr meets the ferry slip and a single road runs north toward the abbey. St Columba founded a monastery here in 563, and Iona became one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Britain and Ireland. Its burial ground is said to hold early Scottish kings.
An Iona map poster shows how little the island needs to make an impression: one road, a few buildings clustered by the water, and a coastline shaped by Atlantic weather. The narrow sound between Iona and Mull gives the composition a natural frame along one edge, while the western shore breaks into small bays and rocky points.

Abbey and village
The abbey stands north of the village on the east coast, linked to it by the island's main road, which traces the most settled strip of land.
Atlantic west coast
The western side faces open ocean and breaks into small coves and rocky headlands, giving the outline more texture than the calm eastern edge.
