Itacaré lies on the southern coast of Bahia, on the stretch known as the Costa do Cacau. The town sits where the Rio de Contas reaches the Atlantic. On a map its streets fill a small peninsula between the river mouth and the sea, with the waterfront curving along the estuary and short lanes leading down to the first beaches.
South of town, the coast breaks into a series of small coves separated by rocky, forested headlands. Several of these beaches are reached by footpaths rather than roads, so the map shows green, empty stretches between each patch of sand. The coastal road to Ilhéus runs inland of them, and the area is known for its surf and remaining Atlantic Forest.
