Kasongo lies in Maniema province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, not far from the Lualaba, the upper course of the Congo River. The landscape around it mixes forest and more open country, and the town appears on the map as an irregular network of streets and compounds with roads fading into the surrounding land.
In the nineteenth century Kasongo was an important centre on the trade routes that reached inland from the Swahili coast of East Africa, and the region retains cultural ties to that period.
