Harbour and coves
The coastline breaks into a series of small bays and headlands, with the fishing harbour at the centre. It creates a lively, irregular edge on the map.

Katsuura Map Poster & Print
Katsuura is on the Pacific side of the Bōsō Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, about two hours from Tokyo. The coastline here is broken into small bays and rocky points, and wooded hills rise close behind the shore. From above, the town fills the narrow flat land around its harbour, with streets pressed between the water and the slopes.
The town is known for its morning market, which has been held for centuries and is often counted among the three great morning markets of Japan. It is also known for its Big Hina festival, when thousands of dolls are arranged on the long stone stairway of Tomisaki Shrine. The ocean current also keeps summers unusually mild for the Kantō region.
A Katsuura map poster shows the tight relationship between sea, town and hill. The harbour and coves give the composition a jagged edge, the older streets form a compact knot near the port, and the roads that thread inland through the valleys taper away into the green.

Compact old centre
The streets around the port, where the morning market is held, form a dense cluster that contrasts with the sparse hills behind it.
Hillside valleys
Wooded hills press close to the coast, and roads follow the narrow valleys inland. On the map they read as thin lines leading away from the sea.
