Lady Frere Map Poster & Print
Lady Frere lies in the rural interior of the Eastern Cape, in hilly country north of Komani. From above, the town is a small, fairly regular cluster of streets. Around it the land opens into grassland, gentle ridges and dry stream beds, with the settlement pattern thinning out to homesteads connected by tracks.
The town is generally said to take its name from the wife of Sir Bartle Frere, a nineteenth-century governor of the Cape Colony. It has long served as an administrative and trading centre for the surrounding villages, and its main roads lead out across the hills in several directions.
A Lady Frere map poster is mostly about proportion: a compact centre with a lot of space around it. The fine lines of rural roads and footpaths heading into the countryside give the print texture without any crowding.

Roads into the hills
Routes leave the town and bend to follow the terrain. They form long, loose lines reaching toward the edges of the map.
Scattered homesteads
Outside the grid, small clusters of buildings and connecting tracks dot the hillsides. They give the surrounding countryside a fine, even texture.
